Arson at the Arab Bedouin Volunteer Center
On Sunday, December 11, 2011, at 2 AM, Beer Sheva, Israel, AJEEC-NISPED’s Arab Bedouin Volunteer Center went up in flames, severely damaging the building and its contents. This incident marked the second in three days that acts of arson were committed. On both occasions, the perpetrator was caught on camera, but never apprehended (his mouth and hands were covered, so he was not identifiable by the footage alone).
“While arson might have destroyed our home, we stand strong and our devoted to our vision, committed to equality, empowerment and the creation of a shared space for Jews and Arabs. The Arab Bedouin Volunteer Center is an innovative social initiative engaging hundreds of volunteers each year in diverse educational programs in the Arab Bedouin and Jewish communities in the Negev. The Center’s activities has received numerous, prestigious awards for its activities throughout the years.
Whoever carried out this criminal deed obviously objects to the process of empowerment of the population, the building of Arab-Jewish partnership and the Arab Bedouin population’s realization of rights in the Negev. The values represented by the Center are the basis of any sane and developed society. We are asking all who represent society’s voice of reason to protest together with us against this wretched deed. This action is an attempt to prevent the entire civil society from carrying out its important functions.”

On Wednesday, December 14, hundreds gathered representing local municipalities, regional councils, government ministries and social justice NGOs to stand in solidarity with AJEEC-NISPED and our volunteers. Watch here.
Thanks to the support of our donors and friends, we were able to rebuild and now have a beautiful new space for our volunteers to meet and gather.
